Interesting thought. But I can't confirm it unfortunately:

* I've got one machine (Testing preferred, but with Sid and
  Experimental in sources.list, too) where "apt-show-versions | fgrep
  newer" gives no output, but which has the symptoms.

* And I've got one machine (pure Jessie) where "apt-show-versions |
  fgrep newer" shows one package (ballerburg FTR, where I tested a to
  be sponsored package) and it doesn't have the symptoms.

Interesting, thanks for that fact. Did you do an "apt-get update" or
equivalent after removing the 3rd party repos?

I'll try the same with some of my machines.
