Hi,
I think the best solution for now is to vendor the GTK3 crates for squeekboard and build "mixed", i.e. using debian crates plus the vendored GTK ones. This would allow removal of GTK3-rs in debian. Fwiw, the C gtk4-layershell packaging is already prepared (see #1054539).

I don't have the time to port squeekboard (or swayosd which will indirectly need GTK3-rs), but partially vendoring is a good solution imo.
