please consider enabling dark mode by default.

The light mode, at least on all phones I have tried it, is so
bright it becomes really difficult to type in the passphrase.

This is an accessibility issue for people that are sensitive to
light.

I'm not sure I'd agree that this is the solution to an
accessibility issue. For example, dark mode also has far lower
contrast, people that need high contrast might request exactly the
opposite change.

In the end, I think which theme should be used is a very personal
decision that should be taken by the end user depending on their
circumstances and environment. If the first password entry is
difficult, the user can switch to dark mode using the toggle in
the top left corner. This toggle not working would absolutely be a
bug if you have tried it.

Finally, we almost exactly ship the upstream config. Should
upstream change the default we'd follow suit.

I expect to the dark mode to be less problematic, as it has decent
contrast and is also still very bright.
