<p>I apt purged rmlint and rmlint-gui followed by an apt autoremove.
Then, restarted Spyder and the error message did not appear.</p>
<p>To verify, I reinstalled rmlint and rmlint-gui. Then, restarted
Spyder which reproduced the error message.</p>
<p>Then, repeated the whole purge, test, install, test, purge cycle
once more to re-verify the rmlint-gui (or rmlint) version error as
the cause.</p>
<p>If you want me to try something else, let me know, but it sure
looks like the 1040179 bug report can be closed.</p>

Thanks! Oh dear, so that's not the cause of the problem, as I
feared.
Could you try running the attached script? It will check if there are
any installed Debian packages which have an invalid version number;
that was the cause of this problem in #1032995.
