As a technical note, and for future reference, a better way is to
continue using the old version but add a marker that indicates
"additional" stuff.

For example given a "real" upstream version of 4.1.0, you could simulate
a new upstream release with a version number like 4.1.0.20181203, or
4.1.0.20181203+gitabc1234. Naturally, both of those depend upon knowing
that they will not inadvertently supersede a real upstream release that
has been made or that may yet be made.

There may be other better approaches, so it is probably something that
should be brought up for discussion when the need arises.
