Novice Exim user wants to set up a mailing list

The OP's major misunderstanding seems to be that it is needed to have
additional software, in addition to exim, to handle the mailing list.
While exim can be used as a distribution system, this way is rather
uncommon with mailing lists. Exim never cares for Subscribe,
unsubscribe, archive etc and what else is needed to run a mailing list.

And yes, this is rocket science, seriously.
