Although I understand that it would be a good idea to be compatible with the release
architectures, I don't think we can make this ABI change.  I'm fairly certain that it will
break a few packages that use non-pic calls for performance on hppa.  It would also
result in larger and slower code - not great on a 32-bit architecture.

I don't understand what's the big deal about adding -fPIC to gcc's options when building
position independent code.  Thousands of other packages do it.
