FWIW, I had the same problem with Suikoden and changing the BIOS to 
SCPH7003.bin as instructed in aforementioned link did the trick.

I know, not the same game and 7 years later, but I figured it was worth 
mentioning, and worth copying the BIOS name in this thread rather than 
relying on an external forum.

(Note that apparently, after changing the BIOS, one can't reload 
emulator state, so better do it right away before going too far in a 
game.)
