It uses gecko only for the html layout rendering part. Not for the UI
part. Which means all UI related config available in about:config are
likely to do nothing.

A lot of options in about:config aren't effective, even on fully XUL
browsers. It's a big mess containing stuff that shouldn't be there,
stuff for the layout engine, stuff for the xul engine, stuff for the
network subsystem, stuff for (...), and stuff that is there for a set of
applications (like all of mozilla programs). It's almost impossible to
filter out stuff that is not needed by epiphany.
