Hi,

The old compositor wasn't very usable, so it was never enabled by
default. 

The new one that seems to work very well was only added in 2.21.5. This
version might be added in experimental soon, but for now, you can get it
here: http://giskard.noblogs.org/post/2007/12/20/new-metacity-package
