I checked: 

MPD uses libmpg123 in the mad-disabled binary.
 
I recompiled, additionally without the libmpg123 dev files and then it
uses ffmpeg.

Playback is perfectly fine in both cases. I still say mpd does not
handle mad correctly. Not on my system anyway.
