I use MPD with ncmpcpp. On the newest version 0.17-1 under Debian Sid whenever
I use the software mixer to control the volume it produces a heavy acoustic
noise. In my mpd.conf I applied to use the software mixer not the hardware
mixer.
The strange thing is, most of the time the volume is set to 100% and it works
just fine but when I lower the volume it will produce the noise I speak of. The
distortion stops when I set the volume back to 100%.

I use Alsa as sound output and alsaequal provided by the package libasound2
-plugin-equal if that matters.
Controlling the volume via alsamixer works as expected. Maybe it is on my side,
I am not sure. Version 0.16.7-2 worked without a problem.
