I fed cdlabelgen a file name that contained an em-dash (—, U+2014). On
the printout, however, it wasn't an em-dash anymore—it was a bunch of
weird characters. (My locale is en_US.UTF-8).

UTF-8 really ought to work. (I'm not holding my breath, considering the
state of Unicode support in Postscript.)
