Bug#1025861: pulseaudio: Pulseaudio dies after boot

Paul H. Sonnenschein paul at sonnenschein.ruhr
Sat Dec 10 16:49:48 GMT 2022

Package: pulseaudio
Version: 16.1+dfsg1-2+b1
Severity: important

-- Observed behavior:
The GNOME-based system does not recognize any speakers after boot.
Apparently, the cause is that Pulseaudio died:

> $ systemctl --user status pulseaudio
> ○ pulseaudio.service - Sound Service
>      Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service; enabled;
preset:>
>      Active: inactive (dead)
> TriggeredBy: ○ pulseaudio.socket

and I could not find any relevant log entry.
However, after a restart, Pulseaudio works successfully:

> $ systemctl --user restart pulseaudio

[Some time passed between executing these commands]

> $ systemctl --user status pulseaudio.service
> ● pulseaudio.service - Sound Service
>      Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service; enabled;
preset: enabled)
> Active: active (running) since Sat 2022-12-10 17:11:47 CET; 9min ago
> TriggeredBy: ● pulseaudio.socket
>    Main PID: 3239 (pulseaudio)
>       Tasks: 3 (limit: 18351)
>      Memory: 24.3M
>         CPU: 177ms
>      CGroup:
/user.slice/user-1000.slice/user at 1000.service/session.slice/pulseaudio.service
>              └─3239 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no --log-target=journal
>
> Dez 10 17:11:47 debian-lenovo-paul systemd[2026]: Starting Sound Service...
> Dez 10 17:11:47 debian-lenovo-paul pulseaudio[3239]: Stale PID file,
overwriting.
> Dez 10 17:11:47 debian-lenovo-paul systemd[2026]: Started Sound Service.
> Dez 10 17:11:47 debian-lenovo-paul pulseaudio[3239]: Could not find
org.bluez.BatteryProviderManager1.RegisterBatteryProvider(), is bluetoothd
started with experimental features enabled (-E flag)?

-- Expected behavior:
Pulseaudio just works without requiring manual restart.

-- Suspected causes:
There are two events that happened roughly at the time the issue first
appeared:

- I upgraded a lot of packets recently, though they do not appear to have
included pulseaudio.
- I ran out of disk space on my home partition recently.

-- Attempted fixes:
- I reinstalled most packages whose names included pulse or alsa.
- I moved ~/.config/pulse/ to ~/.config/pulse~/

-- Final notes:
While I saw some similiar bug reports, these seemed at least slightly
different,
so I have chosen to create a new one.

-- Package-specific info:
File '/etc/default/pulseaudio' does not exist
