Immediate problem is responding to a question based on a suggestion
made by a debian developer to the person who looks after the ubuntu
packaging via a debian directory in the upstream git repository.
(apologies for the horrible sentence.)

The less immediate problem is how can the debian and ubuntu packaging
be improved (ideally to the point of only needing to do one set of
packaging).

It sounds like there are many ways we could be doing our packaging. I
am happy enough with our current process for the moment.

I think my answer to Corey should be:

1) I think the process we are using works well and avoids some of the
problems he has been having (upstream tagging before he updates
changelog versions, needing to update dependencies at release time
etc).
2) If he clones from our repository then there is a reasonable
opportunity for us to share patches in some form. Ie if we update
dependencies, that patch would be useful for ubuntu too.
3) It would be sensible for upstream remove the debian directory. It
is better maintained separately to avoid problems relating to tagged
releases and changes to packaging between upstream releases.

Thanks,

Joe
