This has now happened. Binary packages are:

libsdl1.2debian        - shared library (taken over from libsdl1.2)
libsdl1.2-dev          - development files (taken over from libsdl1.2)
libsdl1.2-compat-tests - manual tests

libsdl1.2-compat       - transitional package, use libsdl1.2debian instead
libsdl1.2-compat-shim  - transitional package, use libsdl1.2debian instead
libsdl1.2-compat-dev   - transitional package, use libsdl1.2-dev instead

Please don't (build-)depend on the transitional packages, they should be
removed after Debian 13 is released.

I would still consider it to be a bug to have a dependency on
libsdl1.2debian or libsdl1.2-dev: ideally all users of the SDL 1.2 APIs
would migrate to using SDL 2 directly (or even SDL 3, when it becomes
stable, which it is not yet).
