sdlpango is an extension for SDL 1.2, which is unmaintained upstream.

There is no direct replacement that I am aware of; libsdl2-ttf is
similar, but probably does not have the same level of support for
non-Latin scripts and other more advanced font features.

sdlpango seems to include SDL 1.2 objects in its API/ABI, so it will not
be possible to convert it to SDL 2 without breaking API/ABI. As a result,
if there is a version or replacement that targets SDL 2, it should
probably be packaged separately, which is why I'm marking this bug as
"won't fix". This bug can probably only be closed by removing sdlpango
from Debian, after all dependent packages have been ported or removed.

Dependent games seem to be:

- hex-a-hop
- tuxmath
- tuxtype
- everything that depends on libalien-sdl-perl
- everything that depends on libsdl-perl
