I can confirm that the init script *was* already removed on my system and 
that Network Manager then was not started after reboot.

Before I rebooted I downloaded the previous version from 
snapshot.debian.org which for some reason appeared only to have been 
available as an IA64 package, which of course does not matter for the 
init script.

I restored the init script from the previous package version to its 
original location. In my opinion this deserves a much higher severity 
for this bug report, but I will not start a "I override the bug 
severity" you set game here.

I do not think the the GR from last year justifies such an behavior.
