At a first look, I found the following issues:

Packaging issues:
 - Copyright holder name is missing
 - debian/copyright says GPL 2, but it's "GPL 2 or any later".
 - The new upstream version has an OpenSSL exception, so it should be
   save to enable SSL again
 - Missing debian/watch
 - Missing Homepage field
 - It would probably be a good idea to ship the shared lib
 - The clean target doesn't clean every file created during the build
 - Copyright year should be 2007-2010
 - Upstream issue: GPL licence text is a little bit outdated (wrong FSF
   address)
