You can try to change to pthreads instead of fork as an easy test by using a configure option.  Not sure if it will make a difference.

Are you using 1.0.20 or git?

For 1.0.20:

configure --disable-fork-process

For git:

--enable-pthreads

That did get it to scan locally.  I haven't tried network scanning yet.
