<li>I couldn't find any logs of the error. I finally found it's logging to /var/log/syslog, whereas everything on a Slackware system logs to /var/log/messages. Is syslog coded in?</li>

<div>The plugin was 3.19.3, hplip was 3.19.6. It didn't affect printing, but that sat down scanning.</div>
<div>As for libm.so, /usr/lib64/libm.so is a 141 byte script ot header. /lib64/libm.so-2.29 is a glibc lib. I renamed the script, and created a symlink libm.so pointing at /lib64/libm-2.29.so and the problem vanished</div>

<div>I have been doing some heavy lifting on the system side of things (upgrading, compiling) so I reinstalled a slightly older known-to-work version, but the error remains. The printer is new and fine, the ip is correct, it pings and prints a test page :-o. I'll have to queue that to get done.</div>

Please do.<br/>
Your questions does not make sense. xsane (and other tools like<br/>
xscanimage) deals with _image_ acquisition. What happens after you get<br/>
the image(s) off the scanner is for the next tool in your processing<br/>
pipeline.<br/>

Instead of doing all this asking, why don't you simply download<br/>
gscan2pdf, try it out and see if it works for you?<br/>
FWIW, gscan2pdf is developed by an independent developer, not by the<br/>
