Actually, I just saw the screenshot attachments and I notice that
the "apt upgrade" installed the new version of libsane which would
have included the updates.<br>
Adding the repo and doing "apt update" just pulls down the
repository information, but does not perform any upgrade operations.<br>
The "apt upgrade" does that, so that is probably what did the trick.<br>
<br>
If you were running simple-scan while the upgrade was being
performed, you would not see the effect of the upgrade until you
restarted simple-scan, as it would have been holding on to the
previous version of the libsane backends.<br>

OK, I have a few suggestions to see what is going on here. <br>
<br>
Firstly, if this is a new scanner to you, I would check that
the <br>
scanner does not require you to select some mode on the device
itself <br>
to enable remote scanning. <br>
I have a Canon multi-function machine here (imageClass
MF4770n) and in <br>
order to do scanning, I have to set it into "Remote Scanning"
mode <br>
using the control panel, otherwise, I get exactly the same
error as <br>
you, although the error is pretty generic. <br>
<br>
Secondly, I assume that you are using the ADF at the moment.
Could you <br>
attempt a scan on the flatbed area and let us know if this
works? <br>
The reason I ask is that the pixma backend has problems with a
number <br>
of newer Pixma machines and this would at least determine that
SANE is <br>
talking the right language and getting through to the device <br>
sufficiently to have a conversation. Also, while clunky and
awkward <br>
compared to the ADF, you might be able to get some work done.

Thirdly, perhaps you could type the following in a terminal
window: <br>
<br>
SANE_DEBUG_PIXMA=50 SANE_DEBUG_ESCL=50 SANE_DEBUG_DLL=10
simple-scan <br>

...and try to perform an ADF scan. This should generate some <br>
informative information about the escl and pixma backends, the

that are being loaded. <br>
