The non-functional lessons were removed as part of the 1.5.17->1.7.0
cycle.  It just takes a while for the newer versions to propagate into
the distros.

I noticed you put a SUSE-specific string in tuxmath.desktop. Since the 
only thing that would prevent Ubuntu from syncing straight from Debian 
(once they start using your .desktop files and icons of course) would be 
an Ubuntu-specific string in both tuxtype.desktop and tuxmath.desktop, 
would it be possible for you to add these string to them ?
For tuxtype:
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=tuxtype

and for tuxmath:
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=tuxmath

I attached the modified files + some French translations.

Since you have a new .svg icon for tuxmath, but not all types (.xpm, 
.ico, etc...) reflect this, I took the liberty to convert it to all 
formats you have in data/images/icons, so they all reflect the change. 
They're attached to this email. I chose 48x48 because it's the 
Freedesktop standard, for Windows and OSX I'm not sure. They're 
converted with Inkscape (PNG) GIMP (ICO) and http://iconverticons.com/ 
(ICNS, HQX) for those that I couldn't find a way to convert from Linux.

I've also modified the tuxmath .svg icon for tuxtype and done the same 
conversions.

Sure - I only started to learn about .desktop files a few months ago
when I investigated the opensuse build service - tuxmath.desktop was
taken from what the previous opensuse packager had written for
tuxmath, and likewise for tuxtype.

Hi,
I'm testing Tuxtype 1.7.4 in Ubuntu 9.04, and since the Debian packaging 
produced unexpected results, i tried again with the 1.7.4 tarball and 
using only configure/make/make install. Using the source package on the 
web site, I noticed that Fish Cascade>Instructions doesn't work, tuxtype 
complains:
"error loading script /usr/share/tuxtype/scripts/cascade.xml"

The file is indeed missing in data/scripts.

Another problem: Lessons offers two choices, one being projectInfo.xml 
(shouldn't be there, and also seem to direct to a deprecated email 
address), the other, Lesson_1.xml, doesn't work straight - it shows a 
green screen, pressing the escape key doesn't work, pressing space loads 
a keyboard picture, then pressing the escape key makes the lesson work. 
Here is the console output when trying to launch Lessons>Lesson_1.xml:

enter unload_menu()
GetIndex - Unicode char '' not found in list.
GetIndex - Unicode char '' not found in list.
GetWrongKeyPos() - invalid argument 'index' = -1
GetIndex - Unicode char '' not found in list.

More worrying, using Debian package translations don't work (I tried 
French & German), only the lessons are translated, the menus stay in 
English. I'm CC-ing Holger, probably will have to open a bug report on 
Debian BTS if he (or another Debian user) can confirm it's not just on 
Ubuntu, but do you have any idea what could cause it in the meantime?

Also, I wonder if it would be a good idea to offer Linux binaries too on 
the site - no need for an Autopackage, but an archive would be nice for 
non-technical users.

I just noticed I put the XPM icon in 48x48, they should be 32x32 - 
attached are the ones with the right size.

Not sure when the xml lesson problem started - it had worked
previously, but it has the problem you describe now (both 1.7.4 and
svn).

Fish Cascade is limited to 8 chars currently - Mobin must have added
some words that are longer than that - also looks like the Tamil
keyboard.lst is not complete.  This just means that these words won't
be used (tuxtype used to segfault if any words were too long).

The issue here is that last year we switched to using standard GNU
gettext, but some aspects didn't get implemented yet.  Namely, tuxtype
does not yet automatically use the current system locale.  It does use
locales internally when a language/theme is selected within the
program.  So, if you pick Deutsch within tuxtype, it should display
that in the menus (at least it does on my Debian system).  You need to
have de_DE.utf8 present on your system for it to work.

The reason this isn't yet implemented is that we need to write some
code to see if a requested locale matches one of the included themes,
and set the theme accordingly.  So, for now tuxtype always starts in
English.  It's basically just work in progress.  Note that the "old"
tuxtype didn't pay attention to system locale either, although it did
save the selected language and start in that language the next time.

started making rpms for multiple distributions through the opensuse

Also,

I tried the Debian package from Sid, and I found as you did that the
menus stay in English no matter what.

If I use either the 1.7.4 tarball from tux4kids.alioth.debian.org, or
svn, the menus reflect the language selection (selected within
tuxtype, that is) correctly.

So I'm not sure what the issue is just yet.

All distributions will lag one way or another - I'm thinking about 
offering linux binaries to help spot translations mistakes. For problems 
that appear only in a particular language, there's not much people with 
enough technical knowledge (or time) to compile from source can do. For 
example, in 1.7.3, a few letters didn't appear in the menus when using 
French, even though the .po file looked perfect. In different languages 
like Tamil, there's nothing we could really do to spot the error. 
Considering the problem can creep in between to releases, if in this 
language the translator (or any user able to file a bug) uses a 
distribution that ships 1.7.2 for one year, the problem won't be spotted 
during an awfully long time.

Providing binaries might be a way to spot problems in the original 
archive - packaging problems can be spotted at the distribution level 
more easily, because if a distribution ships 1.7.2 for one or two years, 
that's a slower moving target.

I'm not suggesting organizing translators reviews for each release in an 
organized manner, but easing those reviews - unless, of course, every 
non-English users just happen to be on Suse or Fedora.

Then there's all the smaller distributions or derivatives that could be 
out of date for a long while - providing RPM and DEB isn't that much of 
a solution either.

I've committed fixes for several of the issues you pointed out:

Now it works.  This is strange - the convenience macros for marking
strings for gettext ("_(String)" and "N_(String)" aren't working, but
the strings are picked up with  the full function call
("gettext(String)").  The macro definitions from globals.h are taken
straight from the gettext manual:

#define _(String) gettext (String)
#define gettext_noop(String) String
#define N_(String) gettext_noop (String)

So they should work, and I know globals.h is getting included in
pause.c and the other files having this problem.

Haven't figured that one out yet.  I can only reproduce this with the
Debian 1.7.4 package - it doesn't appear in my local build.

Holger, does the Debian package have any patches that could be
affecting the operation of gettext?

Anyway, when I get the rest of these issues resolved, I will plan to
post a 1.7.5 release.

no, there is only debian/patches/130_fix_german_keyboard-lst.patch left, which 
is fixed in trunk now too and contains some corrections for german keyboards.

Build-Depends: debhelper (>=5.0.42), libsdl-mixer1.2-dev, libsdl-image1.2-dev, 
libsdl1.2-dev, libsdl-ttf2.0-dev, libsdl-pango-dev, quilt

also looks good to me.

Now that one is fixed too, thanks to Bruno Haible, the gettext
maintainer.  He has
been exceedingly responsive to my newbie gettext questions since we
started implementing i18n.

When I do a "./configure; make; sudo make install" with the Debian
1.7.4 tuxtype tarball, the menus are translated appropriately.

I think the problem may be with installation of the tuxtype.mo files
when tuxtype gets installed by apt.  With the Debian tuxtype package
installed, they don't show up anywhere under /usr using 'find', at
least on my machine.

1.7.4 is the first tuxtype version in Debian to use GNU gettext.  The
previous versions didn't use .mo files, so maybe the package needs to
be updated to reflect this change.

Hi all,

I've posted tarballs and a Windows binary for tuxtype-1.7.5 on the
Alioth site.  There are also rpms for all the supported distros in the
Education project of the openSUSU build service. I'll try to get
Macports updated soon, and hopefully a Mac binary dmg (this has been
lagging, I know).

Tuxtype-1.7.5 addresses several annoying issues that were noted in
1.7.4, primarily some translation issues and handling of the xml
lesson files.  As of yet, tuxtype still does not automatically start
in the current system locale, and it does not "remember" the
previously selected language when run again.  These issues (and
hopefully a command-line language selection option) will be addressed
soon.

I am Mrs. Margaret Williams, I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and I am married to Mr. Kelvin Williams, director W.C Industries Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa. We were married for 36 years without a child before my husband died. (Though we had a boy, but he died on a crassly motor accident in France some years past). Recently, my doctor told me that I would not last for the next eight months, due to my cancer problem (cancer of the liver).

Hi,

while preparing tuxtype 1.7.5 for Debian I noticed several short comings with 
the website:

- 1.7.5 is not linked
- on the tuxmath page the source for tuxtype is linked
- https://alioth.debian.org/frs/?group_id=31080 is not linked neither, so that
  it's impossible to navigate to newer releases when they are not linked.
- the code still lives in htdocs/newsitetest - I suggest to move it to
  htdocs/ :-)

Also I'm must say that I'm not really happy with the navigation yet. 
http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/tuxtype/ looks like a totally different 
website then http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/ and it's hard to see how to 
get back. And it's hard to find that place in the first place - I suggest to 
add the three projects in the "project" submenu on 
http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/ so it's easier to find.

I've also noticed that menu navigation with cursor keys still doesnt work and 
that when you launch it from the command line, you get output like this, 
while I think this should only be there if called with --debug:

$ tuxtype

Thanks for that, it has been corrected. Also are there any release notes 
for this version? I don't remember it being released and we aught to 
post a news article that the new version is out.

Had you checked that recently? It was linked to tuxtype several weeks 
ago, but that was corrected as soon as I got the email from... maybe 
David? I double checked when I modified the download pages a bit, but 
all the links were still to Tuxmath.

Actually the code that we are using for the site IS in the htdocs and 
has been since we went live. I thought I had deleted everything in the 
newsitetest folder, but maybe svn put it back, or maybe I thought I did 
and didn't really. Either way it is fine to delete what is in the 
newsitetest folder.

Very true, as I understood it, the group wanted to give tuxmath and 
tuxtype their own site to add some distinction. If we make them look 
more like each other that would be fine, but then we'll lose the themes. 
Just let me know what you guys want, either way is fine for me.

The link "About Tux4Kids" links to the tux4kids homepage, I'm not sure 
how to make it any easier. Let me know if you have suggestions for a

Well, I don't think it is all THAT hard, lol, but again, any suggestions 
I can get are helpful. Are the other admins of the same mind? While 
building the site it was hard to get any feedback, so we keep working on 
the site trying to make it better as we go.

svn...

Maybe have a common tux4kids "frame" around the tuxtype/math design?

the tux4kids website.

@ Holger,

I do think that is part of the problem, I do not use an SVN client or 
anything. I use SFTP to download and upload the files, then SSH to 
commit then using svn. I sometimes forget to commit it, which is why I 
think you mentioned a couple things that I thought I had fixed.


@ everyone
When I went to commit the changes that holger had suggested, I used the 
cd command to go to the htdocs folder. Then up one more to the tuxmath 
folder (tuxtype folder was done the same way), in putty it had the path as

*mmcspadden-guest at alioth:/var/lib/gforge/chroot/home/groups/tux4kids/htdocs/tuxmath$ 
*

A SFTP connection had the same path. I then used the command

*svn ci*

It brought up a log file, I made some notes, saved it and quit vim. This 
then commited it and sent out the email which is when I noticed that the 
commit directory was

tux4kids-web/htdocs/newsitetest/tuxmath/


What am I doing wrong?

"make install" of tuxtype now creates a path for localstatedir.  This is
being done so that teachers/parents can modify word and phrase lists.  The
GNU coding standards (which is what the autotools follow) say that
localstatedir should be $prefix/var, hence our package's directory would be
/usr/var/tuxtype if $prefix = /usr.  However, the LSB and FHS say
localstatedir should be something under /var, typically /var/lib (and the
tuxtype directory would be /var/lib/tuxtype).  Thus, tuxtype needs to be
configured with "--localstatedir=/var/lib" and the package installation
needs to create /var/lib and /var/lib/tuxtype.  Similarly, we are going to
put tuxtype's global settings in the proper location under /etc which will
be "/etc/tuxtype". This requires a configure flag of "--sysconfdir=/etc".  I
use the following args in the specfile to build the rpms:

%configure --disable-rpath \
           --prefix=%_prefix \
           --localstatedir=%_localstatedir \
           --sysconfdir=%_sysconfdir

However, tuxtype does not yet actually use either of these new locations.
So, for now it makes sense to have the path check messages only show up if
debug is turned on.

Hello Sarah,

Sorry I haven't spent much time with you on your project.  One of the
other students needed help, and I have gotten pretty involved with
getting his project moving in the right direction.

Anyway, I looked at what you have in svn and built and installed the
program.  So far you have been trying to get the word list editing
code from last year working correctly.  It looks like it still has
some significant issues.

Some observations:
1.  pkglocalstatedir (i.e. "/usr/local/var/tuxtype" by default) was
being created with 755 permissions, so only the owner (root) could
write.  I changed the Makefile.am so this dir is created 777 (everyone
can do everything).
2.  If this directory is empty, tuxtype just displays a confusing
blank screen if we select "Edit Word Lists".
3.  It is intended behavior for the first line of the word list to be
the title (or at least that's how it has always worked, not
necessarily  that we need to keep this behavior).
4.  If I put a text file in /usr/local/var/tuxtype, I can definitely
alter it with the editing feature, but it is difficult or impossible
to do it entirely correctly.  It is not at all obvious how to create a
new word, and there is no cursor or other indicator of where the user
is working.
5. When the altered file is saved, garbage characters get added at the
start of the file.
6. There isn't any way to create a new word file.
7. The modifiable word files do not show up in the menu to be selected
by the user at the start of a cascade or comet game.

I realize you have had to deal with what had previously been done in
tuxtype.  Unfortunately, the previously existing code in titlescreen.c
is quite messy and hard to follow.  I think it may be more work than
anticipated to get the in-game editing feature working well enough for
the average person to use without getting frustrated.  The other
approach is to move forward with the Qt-based config program,
tux4kids-admin.  Tux4kids-admin is being set up to have separate
plugins for tuxmath and for tuxtype.  So far, it is really just a
skeleton placeholder.  What are your thoughts on this?
