I believe this is one of the issues you were referring to, Bas:

After a bit of investigation, it turns out that CuraEngine is not really using 
anything 'evil'. The license only applies to some test scripts that RapidJSON 
adopted from json.org, but these aren't distributed with CuraEngine anyway.
RapidJSON has acknowledged this and added a section to their license that 
removing that part is fine, if the scripts are not distributed:
