It's an unfortunate situation that is in part caused by the custom
widget library that Ultimaker built for Cura. While the widgets look
nice, they cause problems when the underlying Qt library is configured
in a way the Cura widgets aren't expecting it. This is more likely to
happen when Qt is used for more than just Cura or updated by the
system's native package manager.

I'm not sure what happened to buster, Cura 3.x was still working when we
introduced it 2 (or 3?) years ago.

Just to clarify: This is with 3.x, correct?
I don't really know what the issue could be there and it's a bit
difficult for me to test.

If you can, please run Cura from the command line and post the output.
Cura prints a lot of debug messages, they should help with debugging the
issue.
