I had a hunch that this was the the case, somehow.
Ultimaker started using jfrog with the 5.0 release, and the introduction of conan was so that could use the jfrog build system. They didn't break anything deliberately.

Great that you could get 5.3 built with modest changes!

I no longer have access to a Ultimaker printer and can't test everything, but I'll take a look anyway.
