  I have to apologize for my comments here: while I could have sworn
that the symptoms I described existed back when I added the Status
column, it's clear now that what I was seeing was just the effects of
the bug that prevented changes from showing up.  I've reinstated this
patch in my own tree and I'll push it out when I get home.
