Such duplication has been a source of problems with aptitude.

Ignoring that 'apt-get source' is quite usable, if other frontends are
to use this then ideally the code from apt-get would be shifted to
libapt-pkg and be usable from all the frontends.  See
apt-pkg/algorithms.cc(ListUpdate).
