I was just thinking that the first command one needs to do is aptitude
update

    Once you have fresh lists of packages, you can choose the packages to upgrade, install, or remove as described in the
    previous section. To review the actions you have requested, press g once. When installing the kaffeine-mozilla package
    (from the previous example), the following screen appears:

So they couldn't get started.

P.S., from man page

   -u
           Begins updating the package lists as soon as the program starts.

i.e., very important.

       update
           Updates the list of available packages from the apt sources (this
           is equivalent to "apt-get update")

Actually no longer equivalent as it is broken.
