I applied this change now.

Not Jan's patch though (but thank's for the that anyway!), because it
was suboptimal in a couple of places, in part due to other changes, had
no doc, didn't have into account setting up the initial widths, and
because I just implemented it as part of other changes.

Will be present in the next release, hopefully soon, so marking as
+pending.
