Banged it home thus:

  If one or more <pattern>s are present (in addition to the mandatory
  last argument, which should be a valid <package> name), then aptitude
  will begin its search at these patterns. That is, the first package in
  the chain it prints to explain why <package> is or is not installed,
  will be a package matching the pattern in question.


from the old:

  If one or more <pattern>s are present, then aptitude will begin its
  search at these patterns; that is, the first package in the chain it
  prints will be a package matching the pattern in question.
