I am wondering if the problem was that the compiler emitted instructions
that were not supported by your CPU (AMD K6), maybe some library or
aptitude itself (or the whole of Debian lenny packages) was compiled to
use the wrong CPU target.

I realise that it is quite late now... but were you able to sort out
this problem?  I am not sure if we can do anything about this report now.
