   * What led up to the situation?

Alright, gcc-6 has re-appeared, it was a case of it not being in either of
experimental or unstable for a short while, where I was used to packages
migrating from unstable to testing to stable and always being in the pool
and visible.

searching for gcc-6$ revealed it to be appearing as "obsolete or locally 
installed".
