I was reviewing this problem with the changes in the last release and in
the one about to happen. I tried to reproduce this bug, directly and
indirectly when checking other bug reports, and I haven't been able to
reproduce it.

In any case, this is a moving target and what happened in 2007/2008 has
little resemblance with the situation today, even if superficially the
symptoms look similar. Several major versions of both apt and aptitude
went by, and some of these issues can come from both libapt, aptitude,
or the interaction between the two.

Many reports in aptitude auto-flag mishandled have been addressed in the
last few months. Probably some (or, with less luck, many) still remain,
and many reports are still open and left to be investigated.

Hopefully it got fixed silently in the last few years, or with the
specific changes in the last releases; but if not, it's better if we try
to catch it when we have a recent and reproducible case.

So closing this report now.

Cheers.
