Package: aptitude
Version: 0.8.3-1+b1
Followup-For: Bug #834790

and i had not installed the appropriate signing key (6BCA5E4DB84288D9), as it
seems to be not available via a keyserver.
after installing the key the problem went away.

as for the bugginess: i do think that this new behaviour is really a problem.
in an ordinary 'update' run, aptitude did not show any error message at the time
when the "Loading cache" stalled.
it might have shown a *volatile* error message while (not) validating the
unsigned Release file, but i don't know as the screen get's blanked before
"Loading cache" so i never really get to see the error message.

also the "Loading cache" usually takes a while, so at first glance everything
looks ok (it's only 5 minutes later when it still says "Loading cache" that
things get worrying). i think a plain exit() would be better in case of
unhandled fatal errors.

gfmards
