Specially during 2015 and 2016 I was working on improving the handling
of automatic flags, which had been getting worse in the previous years,
due to slight misadjustments between [lib]apt and aptitude growing apart
over time.

In particular, I tested this upgrading from old iceweasel to the new
iceweasel which depends on firefox-esr, and it seems to work fine in all
cases when I upgrade (firefox-esr is always marked as automatically
installed).

So I think that this is fixed, closing now, but if you still detect such
problems please reopen or submit a new bug report.

Cheers.
