I'm new to java (because there hasn't been a useful free java until
recently) so I guess I'll just use anything you recommend as long as
it runs on my workstation (400 MHz, 128 MB Ram). I guess I'll install
openJdk ...

It's a pitty you chose java for your project: That way it won't
be possible to use your code directly on an embedded device. For
example I could imagine that somebody writing a web interface to
some babel router might be interessted in the output of babelTool.
