It was more about cleaning up debian/rules and not set some variables  
that needed to be set in the past. Not even sure if that was correct.

Yes. Especially, you have various spelling issues in translatable  
messages in the upstream code. The Debian lintian tool spotted several  
of those, but they may be more.
