Thought: wow, what a mess!
I think that the best thing to do would be to incorporate changes
such as the one that Laurent posted as they are found. Probably
as patches in debian/patches.
We could talk also with upstream about making these
per-distro configurations made at ./configure time.
That would help people who compile from upstream's source
for one reason or another.
