Yes, it's ok.
It is a verb:
2. To represent by any kind of play.
[1913 Webster]
Now sporting on thy lyre the loves of youth.
--Dryden.
[1913 Webster]
3. To exhibit, or bring out, in public; to use or wear; as,
to sport a new equipage. [Colloq.] --Grose.
[1913 Webster]
In this sentence, it's an imaged way to say that linux has an unix heritage.
Cheers,
