Let me keep you updated on what is going on.

I have learned now how to merge fonts in such a way that the anchor points
are preserved. Sonali and Monika have tested it and the Devanagari part in
FreeSans now looks fine, even though it is not yet officially released
(it's available as SFD in the CVS repository). FreeSans is now also
patched with Padmaa to cover Gujarati, but I have not received any reports
on its performance. It probably should work as well as Gargi does.

I have taken a closer look at both Saab and AnmolUni and have decided for
the latter. On a "microscopic scale", the two fonts differ significantly -
I would speculate that AnmolUni has been created from scratch, while Saab
was created from scanning a printed source, which resulted in about 300%
control points more than there ought to be. Smoothing it would be just too
much work, which I believe is not worth doing where there already exists
another better solution. I believe I will probably have AnmolUni ready in
a couple of days, and we can schedule a new release in about one week
time. Is that soon enough for the upcoming Debian Graphical Installer Beta
2 release?
