I should have clarified one point before submitting the bug.

I am *not* using the suggested package "itrans-fonts". Rather I am
using "texlive-lang-indic" which contains the newer versions of the
fonts.

The reason for this choice was that "itrans-fonts" (in etch) depends
on "tetex" and so conflicts with "texlive". Since the new version of
"itrans-fonts" has corrected dependencies, this is no longer a
problem.

With the "itrans-fonts" the package works as expected. So I am
downgrading my bug to wishlist and re-titling it.

Please do *not* apply my patch if the package continues to suggest
"itrans-fonts" with the older versions of the fonts.
