The existence of /tmp is required by the FHS standard, so I think it should 
be safe to assume it exists.

I looked at the suggestion of using the $TMPDIR variable, but it is not by 
default defined on any of the systems I have access to, so I don't really 
see the point?

I haven't been able to find any mention of this in the Debian Policy 
manual. Perhaps you can set me straight on this?

Another possibility is to put the files in the user's home directory, but I 
find that a bit intrusive, and I wouldn't like it myself.
