Thanks for reporting. A typo in my clean rule was leaving a binary in
the sources.

Do you also compare the md5sums of the first and second pacakge? Maybe
it would make sense, as nothing indicates that the second pacakge will
not contain artefacts which are not triggering build failures...

PS: It may have been interesting to announce the effort on -devel and
discuss the common mistakes...
