This is the second time you mentioned problems when using svn-buildpackage.
Unfortunately I can not help here because I do not use it.  But building
by using pbuilders pdebuild or even plain debuild should work perfectly.
My personal workflow is oldfashioned but robust against such problems:

    tar -xzf *.orig.tar.gz
    cd <source-directory>
    cp -a <svn-pkg-dir>/trunk/debian .
    rm -rf `find . -type d -name .svn`
    pdebuild

Once I uploaded the package I copy any changes in the debian directory
to SVN commit the changes and tag the upload manully.

This workflow should at least enable you to create a package.
