Hurd builds are still failing. :-/  The immediate cause is that
configure's test for select's behavior times out(!), but further manual
testing reveals at least one file that expects PATH_MAX to be defined.
In principle, it should be possible to work around both issues by
(conditionally) supplying appropriate hints to the build system, but
that would be enough of a hack that I'd rather simply patch the code a
little more.
