Status update: I've committed patches for both issues, but my attempts
to confirm that all is now well have run into weird build errors (with
some object files being mistagged as for Linux) I don't have time to
track down properly.  As such, I'm downgrading this bug's severity to
important so that ncbi-blast+ will be able to migrate to testing; with
all due respect to hurd-i386, it isn't a release architecture anyway
(though I acknowledge that such logic can lead to a vicious cycle :-/).
