Also, from browsing around at your first link, it looks like the
'systemjpeg' patch is still being applied.  The JPEG we have
internally actually isn't equivalent to the system library, and
replacing it will break some important functionality (reading JPEG2k
images, very popular in the medical imaging field).
I realize this is undesirable, because one never wants to statically
link in a library available on the system, but in this specific case
could conventional wisdom be overridden?  Or is there some other
solution which would allow us to read these kinds of images w/o
relying on a builtin libjpeg?  (Perhaps a 'libjpeg-jpeg2k' package in
debian?)
