Hi Andreas,
the documentation of git-buildpackage includes instructions for creating
a pristine-tar branch in an existing repository:
http://honk.sigxcpu.org/projects/git-buildpackage/manual-html/gbp.import.html
git checkout --orphan upstream
git rm -rf .
git commit --allow-empty -m 'Initial upstream branch.'
git checkout -f master
I will add this to our group policy.
