It would be great if you could try

   debian/rules get-orig-source
   git import-orig --pristine-tar <downloaded_tarbal>
   dch -i
     ... new version ...

and test yourself.  I'm more than busy with other stuff on my todo
list.  Please ping the list in case of any trouble.
